“Pencil on paper is a constant source of inspiration for Alexandra Roozen and leads her to further explore drawing’s possibilities and boundaries. She creates her drawings through a labor-intensive process, which contrasts with the current culture of efficiency and speed that we encounter in our daily lives. In response to this fast-paced culture, she investigates methods for stillness and contemplation, both in the act of making and in the viewer’s experience.
Her process of working is based on the principle of repetition; she endlessly draws lines, strokes, and scratches with small hand gestures. However simple these gestures may seem, they are always unique and unreproducible due to all sorts of variables, such as the human hand, materiality, tools, and environment. The interplay of these variables fascinates the artist, from the smallest element to the larger whole and vice versa.”

Alexandra Roozen lives and works in Rotterdam (NL). She graduated from the St. Joost Art Academy (cum laude). Her work is regularly exhibited both in the Netherlands and internationally, including in South Korea at the Younguen Museum for Contemporary Art (solo), GALLERY2, Seoul (solo) (KOR), Drawing Center Diepenheim (solo) (NL), Verbeke Foundation (BE) and Stedelijk Museum Schiedam (NL). Art fairs including Art on Paper New York (solo) (US) and Amsterdam (solo) (NL), VOLTA Basel (CH) and New York (solo) (US), ART Rotterdam (NL), Drawing Now Paris (FR), PAN Amsterdam (NL) and PULSE Miami (US).

Works are included in various art collections: ABN-AMRO Art Collection, Art Collection European Parliament in Brussels (BE), Museum Schiedam, NOG Art Collection, Collection of Prints and Drawings at Leiden University, Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art (KOR), Erasmus Medical Center, Erasmus University, Rice Group Foundation Hong Kong (CH), Ymere Art Collection, NN Group, Ploum Lodder Princen, State Art Museum Novosibirsk (RU), DOK Delft, Municipalities of Rotterdam, Barendrecht and Eindhoven, and in various private art collections.

Since 2022, Alexandra Roozen has been a mentor and advisor to the grant committee of the Center for Visual Arts Rotterdam. From 2011 to 2024, she was a (core) lecturer in visual arts at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. She gives guest lectures and masterclasses at art institutions including the Frank Mohr as part of the Work & Practice Program and at the Drawing Center Diepenheim.
